Mahr means mandatory dowry given to a woman who is a bride by the man who is a groom for intention of marrying her as to live as husband and wife according to Sharia.
Conditions of permissible Mahr Dowry according to Sharia
- Can be anything a woman request a man who ask her hand in marriage, asking Mahr/dowry is sign of acceptance. a girl or woman who have accepted to marry a man may ask anything she likes.
- Must be obtained from Halaal Means, for example something stolen can not become Mahr/Dowry for example stolen Jewelries, Money earned in forbidden means can not be given as Mahr/Dowry, etc
- Must not be too much even if a man can afford, from his own wish he can as much gifts as possible.
- Must not be a debt , money taken from loan taken for other intentions can not be converted into Mahr/dowry
- Must be Halaal ( permissible in Sharia) for example money earned as interest can not be given as Mahr/dowry.
- Can be negotiated
- The girl or woman must not be forced to ask particular kind of Mahr, but a man may propose to a girl what he can afford, its her choice to say yes to the Mahr or not without being forced.
